The music is constructed from recordings of his grandfather’s funeral. Recorded, mixed, and mastered across the world over 5 years, from Chicago to India to Abbey Road, it tells the story of child on the cusp of the future, coming to terms with death, roots, and possibilities. Past & Future. Ritual & Magic. Other worlds beckon.
Soaring, haunting melodies of a live, 60-piece orchestra meet the visceral, spiritual low-end of sub bass and aggressive, skittering beat programming. Ghostly voices open a diasporic wound, calling into question the idea of roots.
All instruments, vocals, & lyrics written, composed, performed, sung, & produced by SURII.
SURII is the solo project of Surya Giri, who builds worlds between music, tech, & fashion. With a background in orchestration and composition for film and documentary, including scores for Al Jazeera, the BBC, and more, he is currently working on music to release as a solo artist. He grew up across the world, without a particular home.
Surya also ran SGBG Atelier, an emerging womenswear label that revives long-lost handwoven textile & hand-embroidery artisan techniques across India. SGBG’s work has been featured in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Forbes, WWD, and more. They’ve been invited to present at the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Showcase in NY, Paris Fashion Week, and were selected to close India Fashion Week’s “Next Generation of Design” Designer Showcase. SGBG is stocked in LA, Tokyo, Paris, & India.
WeTransfer recently commissioned a documentary on Surya, produced by Yours Truly, which has produced short-form documentaries for James Blake, FKA Twigs, and King Krule. He's also released mixes on NTS Radio.
